Out of all the apple recipes I prepare every fall, this extraordinary Apple Crumble holds a special place in my heart. It requires just a few minutes to put together, and its flavor is unparalleled. It practically sings with the essence of autumn and is the ultimate way to savor the apple season. The crumble topping is exceptionally delectable and provides the perfect contrast to the warmly spiced apple filling.

If there were no onlookers, I'd be tempted to enjoy this directly from the baking dish for dinner.

The sweet apple filling undergoes a delightful caramelization as it bakes, resulting in a mesmerizing texture and a rich, caramel essence. It's one of those desserts that's equally delightful in both the summer and winter months.


Crumble Topping

1 cup all-purpose flour

3/4 cup brown sugar light or dark

1 teaspoon baking powder

½ teaspoon salt

½ teaspoon ground cinnamon

8 tablespoons unsalted butter melted


2 ½ pounds Granny Smith apples peeled, cored, and sliced or diced into bite-sized pieces (about 6 to 7 cups)

½ cup granulated sugar or brown sugar

1 tablespoon lemon juice

2 tablespoons cornstarch or all-purpose flour

½ teaspoon salt

1 teaspoon ground cinnamon

Instructions for Apple Crumble Recipe

Preheat oven to 375°F. Lightly spray an 8 or 9-inch baking dish with nonstick cooking spray and set aside.

Crumble Topping

In a medium bowl combine all-purpose flour, brown sugar, salt, ba king powder, and cinnamon. Whisk to combine.

Add the melted butter and stir with a fork until crumbly.

Prepare Filling

In a large bowl, combine apples, granulated sugar, lemon juice, cornstarch (or flour if using) and ground cinnamon.

2 ½ pounds Granny Smith apples,½ cup granulated sugar,1 tablespoon lemon juice,2 tablespoons corn starch,½ teaspoon salt,1 teaspoon ground cinnamon

Transfer the apple mixture to the prepared baking dish and spread it into an even layer.

Sprinkle the crumble mixture evenly over the top of the filling.

Bake for 35 to 45 minutes or until bubbling and golden brown on top.

Let cool for 15 minutes before serving with ice cream if desired.
