No-Fuss Chili Recipe

While chili is not really made here in South Africa, more and more local chefs and even supermarkets are coming out with their own version for consumers.

While I don’t often make chili in the traditional American sense, I do make my own special recipe that I use for everything from tacos and pizza to spaghetti Bolognese and sauces! It’s also tasty eaten straight with some sour cream dolloped on top.

INGREDIENTS

  • 3 tablespoons olive oil
  • 2 medium red onions, sliced
  • 1 teaspoon Korean chili flakes
  • 1 teaspoon garam masala
  • 1 teaspoon smoked paprika
  • 1 ½ pounds ground beef
  • 1 long red chili, chopped
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • One 14-ounce can of baby tomatoes
  • One 14-ounce can borlotti beans (or use kidney or pinto beans)
  • 1 tablespoon tomato paste
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • ¼ teaspoon flaky salt
  • ¼ teaspoon pepper
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • Garnish: sour cream (optional)

Directions

Heat the oil in a large pot and fry the onions until soft.

Add the chili flakes, garam masala, and smoked paprika. Mix until combined. Add the ground beef and cook for 5 minutes.

Add everything else and cook for 20 minutes. Season to taste

Serve straight with sour cream. Alternatively, use it on pizza, in tacos with avocado, or serve it over some cooked spaghetti in the Cincinnati style!
